Let’s talk

One operator. Three steps. One workflow in use.

BRUTAL: free engine tech behind real games

The framework under Kitten Space Agency and RimWorld's Waylith engine is now free and open source, and it says something about how tools get shared.

What it is

BRUTAL is a free, open-source toolkit for making video games, or for building your own game engine. Picture a game engine as a restaurant kitchen: the stoves, the fridges, the layout. BRUTAL sits underneath that, closer to the gas lines and the plumbing. It lets developers talk almost directly to the computer's hardware, including the graphics card, without a heavy layer in between.

Why it caught my eye

This isn't a weekend experiment. It's described as the foundation under Kitten Space Agency and RimWorld's Waylith engine. So it's tech that already powers real projects, and now anyone can pick it up. It showed up on a weekly GitHub trending list, which usually means other builders noticed too.

What it means if you don't make games

Every industry has its plumbing: the expensive, in-house tools only big players could afford to build. When one of those gets released openly, a small team can start where a big team finished. If your work ever touches interactive or 3D experiences, that door might be a little less heavy now.

Words worth knowing

  • Open source: the recipe is public. Anyone can read it, use it and change it, usually for free.
  • Framework: ready-made building blocks developers start from, so they don't begin with bare dirt.
  • Vulkan: a standard way for software to talk directly to a graphics card. Fast, but demanding.
  • C# (said "C sharp"): a popular programming language, the one BRUTAL is built for.

Something to sit with
