Open-source firmware turns a cheap ESP32-S3 board into a full hardware analysis tool — no extra software, just a browser and a USB cable.

A $10 board that can talk to almost anything

There's a small piece of hardware called a Flipper Zero that became something of a cult object in tech circles — a handheld device that can sniff, read, and interact with all kinds of signals and electronic protocols. It costs around $170.

This week, a developer published something that does something remarkably similar for about $10.

It's called ESP32 Bit Pirate. You buy a tiny development board (the ESP32-S3 — the kind of thing hobbyists use to build connected gadgets), visit a website, click one button to install the firmware, and you have a device that can listen to and interact with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID signals, and a dozen other communication protocols used inside electronic devices.

You control the whole thing through your browser. No software to install. No command line. Just a web interface and a USB cable.

For anyone building a physical product — a connected device, a piece of hardware for a client — this is the kind of tool that used to cost serious money or require a specialist to bring in. Now it fits in a shirt pocket and costs less than lunch.

The project appeared on GitHub's trending list and made the front page of Hacker News. Over a thousand developers starred it in the first few weeks.

Words worth knowing

Firmware — Software that lives inside a hardware device. Not an app you download — it's baked into the chip itself.

Protocol — The language two devices use to talk to each other. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and RFID are all different protocols, like different languages.

ESP32-S3 — A tiny, cheap chip made by a Chinese company called Espressif. It's the engine inside thousands of smart home gadgets and DIY electronics projects.

RFID — The technology behind office key cards and contactless payments. Short for Radio Frequency Identification.
