A PDF reader that's absurdly fast

Most business software that reads PDFs — contracts, invoices, research papers — does something called OCR: it essentially photographs each page and tries to "read" it like a human would. That process is slow, expensive, and occasionally wrong.

Here's the thing: about half of all PDFs don't need that at all. They were born digital — the text is already in there, just locked away in a format that's hard to work with.

PDFOxide is a small, free tool that reaches in and pulls that text out directly. It does it in 0.8 milliseconds per document. For context, a blink of an eye takes about 150 milliseconds. It was tested on 3,830 real PDFs from major research collections and passed with near-perfect accuracy.

Words worth knowing

OCR (Optical Character Recognition): Software that "reads" a scanned image of text, the way you might photograph a handwritten note. Useful for scanned documents, but slower and less accurate than reading text that's already digital.

Text extraction: Pulling text directly from a digital file, without needing to "see" it visually. Much faster and more reliable when the file supports it.
