Let’s talk

One operator. Three steps. One workflow in use.

Intercom Slack Integration: What It Does and Where It Stops

Intercom's native Slack integration does two jobs well: alerting a channel about conversations and running customer support inside Slack, including side conversations and Fin. It doesn't give your own team answers and follow-ups from Intercom data in Slack. That third job needs an app or a custom assistant built on Intercom's API.

Three jobs hiding behind one search

When someone searches for an Intercom Slack integration, they usually want one of three things:

  1. Alerts. Tell a Slack channel when something happens in Intercom.
  2. Support in Slack. Customers or internal teams write in Slack, and the support team answers through Intercom.
  3. Answers and follow-ups for your own team. A salesperson asks in Slack "what did this customer say last week?" or "whose conversations are still open?", and gets an answer from Intercom data.

Intercom's native integration covers the first two, and has improved a lot since late 2025. The third job is a different kind of tool. Knowing which one you need saves a week of fiddling with settings.

I'm David at AC0. I build the third kind, so read the last section with that in mind. The first two sections are about Intercom's own features, checked on 1 November 2026.

What Intercom's native Slack integration does

You set it up under Settings, Channels, Slack. Each connected channel is either Notification only or Conversational, not both.

Feature What it does Plans and limits
Notifications Posts alerts about conversations into a channel through a Workflow action Workflows are on Advanced and Expert, not Essential
Broadcasts Sends one-off messages to Slack channels Text only, no images or attachments yet
Slack as a support channel Messages in connected public, private or Slack Connect channels become Inbox conversations, and replies go back to the same thread Intercom says it's on all helpdesk plans. Slack users are matched by email, or created as new leads
Side conversations in Slack A teammate posts a question from an Intercom conversation into a Slack channel, and thread replies sync back. The customer doesn't see them Launched 20 February 2026. Needs a Conversational channel with the Fin app in it. No @mentions, reporting or Inbox search, and not for Lite seats
Fin in Slack Fin answers in the thread with citations, and hands off to a person with an emoji or @mention Intercom lists it for US-hosted workspaces
Legacy Intercom app for Slack One-way alerts only Deprecated. Its notification features have moved to the native integration

If your need is job one or two, this is the route. It's maintained by Intercom, it keeps conversations in your Inbox and reporting, and Fin can answer the simple questions in Slack the same way it does in the Messenger.

Known gaps, and what to do about them

These come from Intercom's help centre and from threads on Intercom's community forum. Several are still open.

  • Bot and app replies don't sync by default. If an AI bot or another app replies in a Slack thread, it won't reach Intercom unless Intercom support switches on Slack bot reply syncing. Conversations started by bots are off by default too.
  • Teammates can show up as customers. Intercom fixed this for conversations that start in Slack. For side conversations, a forum thread updated in August 2026 still reported duplicate users with the same email.
  • No ticket creation from Slack. Tickets have to be created in the Inbox. Status changes do post back to the thread.
  • Side conversations only go to channels. You can't send a Slack DM, and the Slack message has no link back to the Intercom conversation. Intercom staff confirmed in October 2026 that it's "manual copy-paste for now".
  • Old threads don't count. Messages from before you connected the app won't become conversations.
  • Watch public channels. Intercom warns that data connectors and automations can expose customer data in a public channel.
  • Slack's free plan allows only 10 apps. Worth checking before you add Fin and a third-party app.

Third-party apps that fill the gaps

If the gap is "my team wants to answer Intercom conversations from Slack", an app is usually quicker than building anything:

  • Backreply shows Intercom conversations as Slack threads, so people can reply from Slack, including colleagues without an Intercom seat. Edits don't sync.
  • ClearFeed turns Slack threads into Intercom tickets or conversations, by emoji, automatically or from triage, with two-way reply sync. Conversations created in Intercom don't flow to Slack.
  • Channeled is a paid add-on that sends Slack conversations into the Intercom Inbox.
  • Zapier, Workato and Unito can move simple events between the two if you only need a few triggers.

Job three: an assistant on Intercom's API

None of the above answers "which of my customers are still waiting?" or "how do we handle a booking change?" for your own team, in Slack, using Intercom alongside your other systems. That's an assistant, and Intercom's REST API has what it needs:

  • Conversations can be listed, retrieved and searched. A single conversation returns at most its 500 most recent parts, and search allows up to 15 filters per group.
  • Contacts can be retrieved and searched, so the assistant knows who it's talking about.
  • Help centre articles can be listed and searched with the read_articles_scope permission, so answers come from the same knowledge Fin uses.
  • Rate limits are generous: 10,000 calls a minute per workspace for private apps, enforced in 10-second windows.

That's how AC0 Assistant works for a client's sales and operations team. Colleagues ask about company knowledge in Slack and get answers grounded in the Intercom help centre, with the source visible. In a direct message they can see their own open customer conversations, prepare a reply with the relevant context and opt in to a morning brief based on their Intercom workday. Because it also reads Aircall calls and the order system, it can answer "who needs a call back?", which neither Intercom nor Aircall can do alone. More on that in AI lead follow-up for B2B teams.

Which route fits

  • Native integration if you want alerts in Slack or you support customers who already live in Slack. Turn on bot reply syncing early.
  • A third-party app if your team wants to answer Intercom conversations from Slack without changing tools.
  • A custom assistant if your team needs answers, summaries and next steps from Intercom combined with calls, orders or other systems, inside Slack.

Sources and method

Native features, modes, plans and limits come from Intercom's help articles on connecting a Slack channel, side conversations and the deprecated Slack app, Intercom's changelog for side conversations in Slack (20 February 2026) and the native integration (21 November 2025), and the Fin in Slack page. Known gaps come from Intercom community threads on teammate authentication, bot reply syncing and links back to conversations. Third-party details come from the Backreply and ClearFeed documentation and Intercom's article on Channeled. API details come from Intercom's developer reference and rate limits. All checked on 1 November 2026. Intercom doesn't say which plans include side conversations, or whether Fin in Slack is generally available. The three-jobs framing and route advice are AC0's judgment. The AC0 Assistant example describes published capabilities, without outcome figures.

Words worth knowing

Side conversation: an internal thread started from an Intercom conversation to ask a colleague something, without the customer seeing it.

Slack Connect: a Slack channel shared between two companies, often used to support business customers.

Fin: Intercom's AI agent, which answers customers from your help centre and hands over to a person when needed.

Frequently asked

Does Intercom integrate with Slack?

Yes. Intercom's native Slack integration, set up under Settings, Channels, Slack, connects channels in one of two modes. Notification-only channels receive alerts and broadcasts. Conversational channels turn Slack messages into Intercom conversations, with replies from Fin or teammates going back into the same Slack thread. The older Intercom app for Slack is deprecated.

Which Intercom plans include the Slack integration?

Intercom says Slack as a support channel is available on all helpdesk plans. Notifications about new conversations rely on Workflows, which are on the Advanced and Expert plans, and aren't available on Essential. Checked 1 November 2026.

Why don't Slack replies sync back to Intercom?

Usually because the reply came from a bot or app. Intercom's help centre says Slack bot reply syncing isn't enabled by default and has to be switched on by Intercom support. Also check that the channel is in Conversational mode and that the Fin app has been added to it.

Can my team reply to Intercom conversations from Slack?

For conversations that start in Slack, yes. For conversations that start in Intercom, the native route is a side conversation, where a teammate posts a question into a Slack channel and replies sync back. Answering the customer directly from Slack needs a third-party app such as Backreply or ClearFeed.

Can AC0 build an Intercom assistant in Slack?

Yes. AC0 Assistant answers questions from a company's Intercom help centre, shows a colleague their open customer conversations and prepares replies, all in Slack, and combines that with calls and orders. Scope and fee are agreed before any work starts, and you work directly with David.
